Whats your resolution?

What's your resolution or resolutions? We just about all make them ... lose weight, be a better parent, better spouse, get control of finances, you get the idea. I'm not much on traditional resolutions, but when it comes to fishing I like to make a few just to get the new year started right. I guess my resolutions would be better classified as goals for 2016, in any case, in no particular order here is my list.

  1. Perfect Two New Techniques: There is a whole list of lures and techniques I want to add to my repertoire. There are two that stand out above the rest, the hard jerk bait and drop shot rig. I don't really like using the drop shot but on our clear lakes it is a valuable tool when the bite is off. Jerk baits catch fish year round and while I have used the bait some, I am no where near confident with it. My plan is to take several days where I only bring these two set ups and focus in on getting better and gaining confidence.
  2. Be Competitive in a National Event: Keyword is be competitive, not just compete. I have enjoyed some limited success at some large events like the Tournament of Champions, finishing in the top 1/3 of anglers each time I have competed. But I know I have left a lot of inches out there due to poor execution on tourney day. It will take more planning, preparation, and focus to get where I want to be in 2016.
  3. Increase My Strength and Stamina: Kayak Fishing is an athletic undertaking. You can certainly still catch fish if you are completely out of shape, but it is undeniable that having a higher level of fitness can give anglers a competitive advantage. For 2016 I hope to up my max number of pullups to 25 in a row and increase my bench press capacity by 20%. Paddling is a combo of push/pull movements and focusing on my chest and back will certainly improve the power of my paddle stroke. I will also be finding new ways to increase my cardio capacity for those long paddles on windy days (LAKE SWEPCO!).
I use performance elite products to improve my performance on and off the water.
Have some unique kayak fishing resolutions you are setting for yourself in 2016? Post them in the comments below ... HAPPY NEW YEAR
