Winners Circle - Tim Hotchkin

A Lake SWEPCO Giant
This is the first in a series of articles profiling kayak fishing event winners from around the state of Arkansas. First up is Tim Hotchkin, Tim won the kickoff event to The Razoryak Tournament Trail back in March on Lake SWEPCO. He prevailed against a field of 72 anglers from three different states, bringing an 80" limit to the weigh in to take the victory. Tim is one of the founders of the Arkansas Kayak Anglers, a Pro Staffer for Goldens Baits, and is also a Yak Gear Brand Ambassador.

Angler Profile

Name: Tim Hotchkin

City: Centerton

Home Lake: Crystal Lake

Kayak: Native propel 13

Favorite Technique: Topwater

Event Won: RTT NWA Lake SWEPCO

Describe Your Victory: I had caught some good fish on a drop shot leading up to the tournament and targeted transition from shallow spawning flats to deep pockets. I fished the same 300 yard stretch the entire tournament. I noticed small males on beds and figured bigger females wouldn't be too far from the beds. I fished the goldens paddle tail rigged on a medium light Berkley emotion rod with 6 pound flouro and 10 pound braid backing. When the bite got tough I stood up and started sight fishing the small males.

What got you into kayak fishing?: I was tired of sinking my money and time working on my old boat. I also found all the close to home small water that was perfect for a kayak.

Tips for a beginning tournament angler: Stick to your game plan. Don't let what you hear from other anglers on the water change your tactics.
